Ivermectin is a semi-synthetic derivative of avermectin, produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. This 16-membered macrocyclic lactone is a potent antiparasitic agent that acts on glutamate-gated chloride channels, leading to paralysis and death of parasites.

Commercially available Ivermectin is standardized to ≥95% purity (sum of B1a and B1b) as determined by HPLC. It is widely used in veterinary and human medicine, and is a key ingredient in formulations targeting nematodes, arthropods, and other parasites. Its stability, efficacy, and established regulatory acceptance make it a preferred choice for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications.

Ivermectin is a mixture of two chemically related compounds: 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1a (≥80%) and 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1b (≤20%). The B1a component is the major active ingredient, while B1b contributes to overall efficacy. The product is manufactured through fermentation of S. avermitilis followed by chemical modification.

As a white to off-white crystalline powder, it is practically insoluble in water but freely soluble in organic solvents such as methanol and acetone. This solubility profile allows for versatile formulation approaches, including injectables, pour-ons, and oral drenches in veterinary applications.
