Geranium Oil is a volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh leaves and stems of Pelargonium graveolens, a perennial shrub native to South Africa but now cultivated extensively in Egypt, China, and Morocco. The oil is prized for its complex floral aroma and its high content of monoterpene alcohols—primarily citronellol and geraniol—along with linalool, isomenthone, and guaia-6,9-diene. These compounds contribute to its characteristic rose-like scent and its broad spectrum of biological activities.
In the B2B arena, Geranium Oil is supplied in several grades: pure essential oil (typically 100% pure), and standardized fractions for specific applications. It is widely used as a fragrance component in cosmetics and personal care products, as a flavoring agent in food and beverages, and as an active ingredient in aromatherapy and natural insect repellents. Its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties also make it valuable in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations.
Geranium Oil is a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds. The main constituents are acyclic monoterpene alcohols: citronellol (typically 20-40%), geraniol (10-20%), and linalool (5-15%). Other notable components include isomenthone, citronellyl formate, and guaia-6,9-diene. These alcohols are responsible for the oil’s pleasant odor and its reactivity. The oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a density of about 0.89 g/mL at 25°C and a refractive index of 1.46–1.47. It is soluble in fixed oils, ethanol, and propylene glycol, but practically insoluble in water. It should be stored in a cool, dark place to prevent oxidation and resinification.
