The oil is prized for its complex floral aroma and its high content of monoterpene alcohols—primarily citronellol and geraniol—along with linalool, isomenthone, and guaia-6,9-diene. These compounds contribute to its characteristic rose-like scent and its broad spectrum of biological activities.

Other notable components include isomenthone, citronellyl formate, and guaia-6,9-diene. These alcohols are responsible for the oil’s pleasant odor and its reactivity. The oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a density of about 0.89 g/mL at 25°C and a refractive index of 1.46–1.47. It is soluble in fixed oils, ethanol, and propylene glycol, but practically insoluble in water. It should be stored in a cool, dark place to prevent oxidation and resinification.
