Carvacrol Structure

Sinónimos: 2-Methyl-5-(1-methylethyl)phenol, 5-Isopropyl-2-methylphenol, 2-p-Cymenol, 2-Methyl-5-isopropylphenol, Isothymol, p-Cymen-2-ol, 2-Hydroxy-p-cymene

Carvacrol is a monoterpene phenol found in the essential oils of various aromatic plants, particularly those of the Lamiaceae family. It occurs naturally in oregano (Origanum vulgare), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). Historically, these plants have been used in traditional medicine for their antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties.

Chemically, carvacrol is an isomer of thymol, differing only in the position of the hydroxyl group on the phenolic ring. This structural difference influences its physical properties and biological activity. Carvacrol is the major component of oregano oil, often comprising up to 80% of the oil, and is responsible for its characteristic pungent odor and taste.

Commercial carvacrol is available in high purity, typically ≥98% as determined by GC. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries as a preservative, flavoring agent, and active ingredient in antimicrobial formulations. Its broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and yeast makes it a valuable compound for various applications.

Function & Mechanism

  • Antimicrobial activity: Disrupts bacterial cell membranes, leading to leakage of cellular contents and cell death.
  • Antifungal activity: Inhibits fungal growth by interfering with ergosterol biosynthesis and membrane integrity.
  • Antioxidant activity: Scavenges free radicals and chelates metal ions, protecting against oxidative damage.
  • Anti-inflammatory activity: Suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes such as COX-2.
  • Flavoring agent: Provides a warm, pungent taste and aroma in food and oral care products.

Source & Standardization

  • Source: Synthetic or isolated from essential oils of Origanum vulgare, Thymus vulgaris, etc.
  • Extraction: Fractional distillation or chemical synthesis.
  • Standardization: ≥98.0% carvacrol (GC).
  • Forms: Liquid.
  • Aplicaciones: Pharmaceuticals, food preservatives, cosmetics, animal feed, antimicrobial formulations.
