Baicalein is a naturally occurring flavonoid aglycone extracted from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap) and other Scutellaria especies.

It is one of the primary bioactive components of Huang Qin (黄芩), a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a history of use for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

Baicalein is the aglycone form of baicalin, meaning the sugar moiety is removed, resulting in enhanced bioavailability and biological activity compared to its glycoside counterpart (baicalin). It belongs to the flavone class of flavonoids and is characterized by a unique hydroxylation pattern at the 5, 6, and 7 positions of the A ring.

Baicalein has been extensively studied for its neuroprotective, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory activities. Its mechanisms of action include modulation of NF‑κB, inhibition of lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, activation of Nrf2 (antioxidant response), and regulation of apoptosis and autophagy pathways.
