Baicalein is a naturally occurring flavonoid aglycone extracted from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap) and other Scutellaria species.

It is one of the primary bioactive components of 黄芩 (黄芩), a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a history of use for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

Baicalein is the aglycone form of baicalin, meaning the sugar moiety is removed, resulting in enhanced bioavailability and biological activity compared to its glycoside counterpart (baicalin). It belongs to the flavone class of flavonoids and is characterized by a unique hydroxylation pattern at the 5, 6, and 7 positions of the A ring.
