Allyl isothiocyanate (C4H5NS) is a small, lipophilic molecule with a molecular weight of 99.15 g/mol. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a sharp, lachrymatory odor. The compound is volatile and sensitive to light and heat, so it is typically stored under cool, dark conditions. Its electrophilic isothiocyanate group reacts readily with nucleophiles, which underlies both its antimicrobial action and its handling precautions.

• Antioxidant response: Induces Nrf2-mediated phase II detoxifying enzymes, enhancing cellular antioxidant defenses.
• Thermogenic effect: Topical application increases local blood flow and generates a warming sensation, useful in analgesic balms and rubefacients.
