Bromhexine HCl is the hydrochloride salt of bromhexine, a synthetic benzylamine-derived mucolytic agent. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, freely soluble in ethanol and slightly soluble in water.
As a pharmaceutical API, it is widely used in oral and injectable formulations for respiratory conditions characterized by thick mucus. It is also a key starting material for the synthesis of ambroxol, its active metabolite.
