Heparin sodium is the sodium salt of a sulfated glycosaminoglycan obtained from porcine intestinal mucosa or bovine lung tissue. It is a highly sulfated polymer of alternating uronic acid and glucosamine residues, supplied as a white to off-white powder that is freely soluble in water.
