Heparin sodium is the sodium salt of a sulfated glycosaminoglycan obtained from porcine intestinal mucosa or bovine lung tissue. It is a highly sulfated polymer of alternating uronic acid and glucosamine residues, supplied as a white to off-white powder that is freely soluble in water. The material is standardized by its anticoagulant activity, expressed in International Units (IU) per milligram, and is typically available in potency grades suitable for pharmaceutical compounding and research applications.
