ディオスゲニン

Diosgenin is a naturally occurring steroidal sapogenin derived primarily from the tubers and rhizomes of Dioscorea species (wild yam), as well as from Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) and other plant sources. It is one of the most important phytosteroids used in the pharmaceutical industry, serving as a key starting material for the semi-synthesis of numerous steroidal drugs, including corticosteroids, sex hormones (progesterone, testosterone, estrogen), and oral contraceptives.

Beyond its role as a pharmaceutical intermediate, diosgenin has been extensively studied for its own biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hypolipidemic, and anticancer properties. It is also widely used in dietary supplements marketed for hormone balance and menopausal support, although diosgenin itself is not directly converted to hormones in the human body.
