Diosgenin is a naturally occurring steroidal sapogenin derived primarily from the tubers and rhizomes of Dioscorea species (wild yam), as well as from Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) and other plant sources. It is one of the most important phytosteroids used in the pharmaceutical industry, serving as a key starting material for the semi-synthesis of numerous steroidal drugs, including corticosteroids, sex hormones (progesterone, testosterone, estrogen), and oral contraceptives.
Beyond its role as a pharmaceutical intermediate, diosgenin has been extensively studied for its own biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hypolipidemic, and anticancer properties.
