Oxibendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic developed for veterinary use, particularly in the treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes in livestock and companion animals. It was first introduced in the 1970s and has since become a reliable choice for deworming programs. The compound is structurally related to other benzimidazoles such as albendazole and fenbendazole, but features a propoxy group at the 5-position of the benzimidazole ring, which contributes to its distinct pharmacological profile.

As a member of the benzimidazole class, oxibendazole exerts its anthelmintic effect by binding to β-tubulin, disrupting microtubule formation in parasites. This leads to impaired glucose uptake and eventual death of the helminths. It is effective against a broad spectrum of nematodes, including large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms, and ascarids. The compound is well-tolerated in target species and has a favorable safety margin.

Oxibendazole is available in various formulations, including oral suspensions and pastes, often combined with other anthelmintics to broaden the spectrum of activity. Its stability and efficacy make it a valuable tool in veterinary medicine. The product is standardized to high purity, ensuring consistent performance in formulations.

Function & Mechanism

  • Microtubule inhibition: Binds to β-tubulin, preventing polymerization and disrupting cellular transport.
  • Energy depletion: Impairs glucose uptake, leading to parasite starvation.
  • Broad-spectrum activity: Effective against various nematodes, including resistant strains.
  • Ovicidal effect: Inhibits egg development and larval hatching.
  • Safety profile: Low toxicity in mammals, suitable for regular use.

Source et normalisation

  • Source: Synthetically produced via a multi-step chemical process.
  • Normalisation: ≥99.0% purity by HPLC.
  • Formulaires: White to off-white crystalline powder.
  • Applications: Veterinary anthelmintic formulations, research.
