Algal DHA has become a preferred omega-3 source for formulators who need a vegan, sustainable alternative to fish oil. It is widely used in infant nutrition, dietary supplements, and functional foods, where a clean taste and consistent potency are critical.

DHA is a 22-carbon omega-3 fatty acid with six cis double bonds. In algal DHA, it is produced via heterotrophic fermentation of microalgae such as Schizochytrium sp., then extracted and refined into a triglyceride oil. This route avoids ocean-borne contaminants and delivers a reliable, traceable supply.

Commercial grades are standardized to 40% or higher DHA content, typically as triglycerides. The oil is available in various concentrations to meet specific formulation needs, from softgels to beverages.

Algal DHA is a triglyceride oil rich in docosahexaenoic acid. The fermentation process yields a lipid profile that closely mimics fish oil but without the characteristic marine odor or environmental concerns. The oil also contains other omega-3 fatty acids, such as DPA, in smaller amounts.

The triglyceride form is the natural form found in human milk and is well absorbed. For specific applications, ethyl ester and free fatty acid forms are also available, though the triglyceride form remains the industry standard for most supplements.
