DHA is a 22-carbon omega-3 fatty acid with six cis double bonds. In algal DHA, it is produced via heterotrophic fermentation of microalgae such as Schizochytrium sp., then extracted and refined into a triglyceride oil. Commercial grades are standardized to 40% or higher DHA content, typically as triglycerides. The oil is available in various concentrations to meet specific formulation needs, from softgels to beverages.
