Japanese Knotweed Extract is a purified botanical fraction isolated from the root of Polygonum cuspidatum, a perennial plant that has become a commercial source of resveratrol. The molecule itself is a stilbenoid: two aromatic rings joined by an ethylene bridge, with three hydroxyl groups positioned to allow efficient radical scavenging and metal chelation. This arrangement underpins most of its studied activities, from antioxidant defense to modulation of inflammatory signaling.

The extract is produced by solvent extraction of dried roots, followed by chromatographic purification to reach resveratrol concentrations of 98% or higher. It is a solid, off-white to light brown powder that dissolves readily in ethanol and acetone but has very limited water solubility. Because the purification step removes much of the plant matrix, the final material is a high-purity single compound rather than a broad-spectrum botanical.

Formulators use it in dietary supplements, functional beverages, and cosmetic preparations where a defined resveratrol content is required. Research groups also rely on it as a reference standard for analytical work and as a test article in cell and animal studies. The combination of high purity and well-characterized chemistry makes it a practical choice for products that need consistent dosing.

Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) has a molecular formula of C₁₄H₁₂O₃ and a molecular weight of 228.24 g/mol. The trans isomer is the naturally dominant form and the one specified in most commercial extracts. It appears as a crystalline solid with a melting point around 261–263°C. The phenolic hydroxyls are responsible for its antioxidant behavior, while the conjugated stilbene system gives it a characteristic UV absorption profile used for identification.
