What is Mangiferin?

Mangiferin, also known as Guanzhimuning or mangiferin, is a carbon ketone glycoside of tetrahydroxypyridone, belonging to the class of biphenylpyridone flavonoids.

It mainly comes from the dried rhizomes of perennial herbaceous plants in the lily family, such as Anemarrhena, leaves, fruits, and bark of plants such as almonds and mangoes, and roots of five layered dragon plants in the winged vine family, such as Hainan Five layered Tower;

It has a variety of pharmacological activities, such as cough relieving, asthma relieving, expectorant, immune, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, liver protecting and cholagogic, anti lipid peroxidation, anti-cancer, anti diabetes, anti-bacterial, anti-virus, etc.

Extraction Methods

1. Organic Solvent Extraction
High-purity mangiferin is extracted from mango leaves using over 90% ethanol as the extraction solvent.

2. Water-Based Solvent Extraction
Mangiferin is extracted from mango leaves using a weak alkaline water solution. The extract is then eluted through a D101 macroporous resin column, followed by impurity removal and decolorization using a D301 column. This high-purity mangiferin extraction process is suitable for large-scale industrial production.

3. Enzymatic Extraction
Mangiferin is extracted by enzymatic hydrolysis of mango leaves using cellulase. The optimal conditions are: pH 5.0, temperature 55°C, and extraction time of 2 hours.

4. Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction
The ultrasound-assisted extraction process offers advantages such as simplicity, shorter extraction time, and energy efficiency. It has good potential for further development and application.
