Carp Pituitary Gland (CPG) is a biological material derived from the pituitary glands of carp (Cyprinus carpio). The pituitary gland is the master endocrine gland responsible for producing and secreting hormones that regulate growth, reproduction, and metabolism. In aquaculture, carp pituitary extract is primarily used as a source of gonadotropins (GtH I and GtH II), which stimulate gonadal development and induce spawning in fish.
Carp pituitary extract has been used for decades in fish breeding programs to induce ovulation and spermiation in species that do not spawn naturally in captivity. It is particularly valued in the breeding of cyprinids (e.g., carp, tilapia, catfish) and other freshwater fish species. The extract contains a complex mixture of hormones, including gonadotropins, growth hormone, prolactin, and thyrotropin, which work synergistically to promote reproductive function.
CPG is available as a powder (acetone-dried) or as frozen tissue, and its potency is standardized by biological activity. It is a critical tool in commercial fish hatcheries and research institutions worldwide.
