Sildenafil and Tadalafil: Two Common Ingredients for ED
Sildenafil and tadalafil are the two most commonly prescribed ingredients for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) and improving male sexual performance.
Both were originally sold as FDA-approved brand-name drugs. After their patents expired, generic versions became widely available.
While the original brand-name products came in tablet form, our pharmacy often compounds these ingredients into troches — which are medical lozenges.
We offer multiple strengths for both sildenafil and tadalafil, depending on individual needs and how the medication will be taken.
Generic Versions of Popular Erectile Dysfunction Drugs
Released in the late 1990s, Viagra quickly became one of the most well-known drugs in the U.S. Viagra was the first FDA-approved drug for treating erectile dysfunction. Its main ingredient is a vasoactive drug called sildenafil. After Viagra was popularized came the release of Cialis, which has a longer half-life and contains the drug tadalafil. Both Viagra and Cialis are made in tablets but the drugs they are made with can be compounded into other forms. Generic alternatives to these popular male enhancement drugs are now available in troches from our compounding pharmacy.

How do Sildenafil and Tadalafil Work?
Both drugs work by inhibiting certain enzymes to increase blood flow to the penis however there are differences between them. While sildenafil may cause an erection without sexual stimulation, tadalafil will not. Tadalafil may be prescribed to be taken on a daily basis and will have a cumulative effect if taken long-term. In that way it does not need to be taken immediately before sexual activity. For daily use, a smaller dosage is prescribed compared to when it is used on an as-needed basis.
Sildenafil and tadalafil are phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. PDE5 degrades cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the corpus cavernosum. The corpus cavernosa are the main regions of erectile tissue that are filled with blood during an erection. When PDE5 is inhibited, cGMP is increased, which relaxes smooth muscles and allows more blood flow to the penis. The increased blood flow improves erections and helps maintain them longer.
Other Uses for Sildenafil and Tadalafil
In addition to their ability to treat erectile dysfunction, sildenafil and tadalafil are also sometimes used for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. This condition is caused by increased blood pressure within the arteries of the lungs, which can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. The commercially available version of tadalafil was also indicated for use in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate.
