Telmisartan is a non-peptide angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively antagonizes the AT1 receptor subtype. It was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and has been a cornerstone in the management of hypertension and cardiovascular risk reduction since its approval in the late 1990s. Unlike many other ARBs, telmisartan possesses a unique biphenyl carboxylic acid structure that confers high lipophilicity and a long duration of action.

Its molecular formula is C33H30N4O2, with a molecular weight of 514.62 g/mol. The compound is practically insoluble in water but freely soluble in DMSO and slightly soluble in ethanol. This solubility profile, along with its high melting point, makes it a stable and manageable API for solid dosage forms.

As a generic API, telmisartan is standardized to ≥99.0% purity (HPLC) and is widely used in the manufacture of immediate-release tablets, often in combination with hydrochlorothiazide or amlodipine.
