Synonymes : Citrus limon oil, Lemon peel oil, Lemon essential oil, Cold-pressed lemon oil, Citrus limonum oil, Lemon oil expressed.

Lemon Oil is a volatile essential oil obtained by cold expression of the fresh peel of Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f., a small evergreen tree cultivated extensively in Mediterranean regions, California, and Argentina. Unlike distilled oils, cold-pressed lemon oil retains the full spectrum of non-volatile compounds, including coumarins and psoralens, which contribute to its characteristic fresh, citrus aroma and potential phototoxic effects. In traditional medicine, lemon oil has been used as a digestive aid, antiseptic, and mood enhancer, and it remains a staple in aromatherapy and flavor applications today.

The oil’s chemical profile is dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons, primarily d-limonene (typically 60–75%), followed by β-pinene, γ-terpinene, and oxygenated compounds such as citral (neral and geranial) and citronellal. This composition varies with the origin, harvest time, and extraction method, influencing both odor quality and functional properties. Compared to distilled lemon oil, the cold-pressed variety has a richer, more authentic fruity note and higher levels of heavy, non-volatile residues.

Commercial Lemon Oil is available in several grades: food-grade (FCC), pharmaceutical-grade (USP/NF), and technical-grade. It is standardized by GC analysis to ensure consistent terpene content and is widely used as a flavoring agent in beverages, confectionery, and pharmaceuticals, as a fragrance in personal care products, and as a natural solvent in industrial cleaning formulations. Its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties also make it a subject of ongoing research in food preservation and nutraceuticals.

Function & Mechanism

  • Antimicrobial activity: d-Limonene and citral disrupt microbial cell membranes, showing efficacy against bacteria and fungi.
  • Activité antioxydante: Terpenes scavenge free radicals, retarding lipid oxidation in food systems.
  • Flavor and aroma: Provides a fresh, citrusy note and enhances palatability in oral products.
  • Digestive stimulant: Traditionally used to relieve dyspepsia and bloating, possibly by stimulating gastric secretions.
  • Solvent properties: Acts as a natural degreaser, dissolving oils and resins in industrial applications.
  • Mood elevation: Aromatherapy use suggests calming and uplifting effects, though clinical evidence is limited.

Source et normalisation

  • Source: Fresh peel of Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f.
  • Extraction: Cold expression (cold-pressed) or steam distillation.
  • Normalisation: Typically standardized to a minimum d-limonene content or specified GC profile.
  • Formulaires: Pale yellow to greenish-yellow liquid.
  • Applications: Food and beverage flavoring, pharmaceuticals, aromatherapy, personal care, industrial solvents.
