Eucalyptus Oil is a volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh leaves and terminal branchlets of Eucalyptus globulus and other Eucalyptus species. The oil has a long history of use, from Aboriginal Australian traditions to modern pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Today, it remains one of the most widely traded essential oils globally, valued for its distinctive camphoraceous aroma and high 1,8-cineole content.

The primary bioactive constituent is 1,8-cineole (also known as eucalyptol), a cyclic ether monoterpene that typically accounts for 70–85% of the oil. Other components include α-pinene, limonene, p-cymene, and terpinen-4-ol, which contribute to the oil’s overall profile. The high cineole content distinguishes Eucalyptus globulus oil from other eucalyptus varieties such as E. radiata or E. citriodora, which have different chemical compositions and applications.

Commercial Eucalyptus Oil is standardized to a minimum of 80% 1,8-cineole, with some grades reaching 85% or higher. It is used across a range of industries: as an active ingredient in respiratory and topical analgesic products, as a flavoring agent in oral care and confectionery, as a fragrance component in soaps and detergents, and as a natural insect repellent. Its solvent properties also make it useful in industrial cleaning formulations.

Fonction

  • Respiratory support: 1,8-Cineole acts as an expectorant and mucolytic, helping to clear airways.
  • Antimicrobial activity: Exhibits broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
  • Anti-inflammatoire: Reduces inflammation and relieves minor muscle and joint pain.
  • Insect repellent: Effective against mosquitoes and other biting insects.
  • Flavor & fragrance: Provides a fresh, camphoraceous note in oral care and household products.
