Cinnamic Acid Structure

Sinónimos: trans-Cinnamic acid, (E)-Cinnamic acid, 3-Phenylacrylic acid, 3-Phenyl-2-propenoic acid, β-Phenylacrylic acid, Cinnamylic acid

Cinnamic acid is a naturally occurring aromatic carboxylic acid with the formula C9H8O2. It was first isolated from cinnamon oil in the 19th century and has since become a key intermediate in organic synthesis. The trans isomer is the dominant form in nature, found in cinnamon, balsam, and shea butter.

Industrially, cinnamic acid is produced via the Perkin reaction between benzaldehyde and acetic anhydride. It serves as a precursor to numerous derivatives, including cinnamates, which are widely used as flavorants, fragrances, and UV absorbers. Its reactivity and low toxicity make it a staple in pharmaceutical and agrochemical manufacturing.

With a purity of ≥99.0% (HPLC), our cinnamic acid meets stringent quality standards for use in APIs, cosmetic actives, and food additives. It is available in bulk quantities with full documentation to support regulatory submissions.

Function & Mechanism

  • Antimicrobial activity: Inhibits growth of bacteria and fungi by disrupting cell membrane integrity.
  • Antioxidant properties: Scavenges free radicals and chelates metal ions, preventing oxidative damage.
  • UV absorption: Acts as a UV filter in sunscreens by absorbing UV-B radiation.
  • Flavor and fragrance precursor: Used to synthesize cinnamates, which impart cinnamon-like notes.
  • Pharmaceutical intermediate: Serves as a building block for drugs such as phenylalanine and certain anti-inflammatory agents.

Source & Standardization

  • Source: Synthetic (Perkin reaction) or natural extraction from cinnamon oil.
  • Extraction: For natural grade, steam distillation of cinnamon bark followed by crystallization.
  • Standardization: ≥99.0% (HPLC) for synthetic; natural grade typically ≥98.0%.
  • Forms: White crystalline powder or flakes.
  • Aplicaciones: Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and beverage, agrochemicals.
