Carbomer has long been a workhorse in topical and oral formulations, prized for its ability to thicken water-based systems at very low use levels. Demand remains steady across personal care, pharmaceutical gels, and controlled-release tablets, where formulators need a reliable rheology modifier that behaves predictably batch to batch.
It is a high molecular weight cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymer, typically synthesized from acrylic acid with allyl ethers of pentaerythritol or sucrose. The polymer backbone carries carboxylic acid groups that, once neutralized with a base such as triethanolamine or sodium hydroxide, uncoil and form a clear gel network. This mechanism gives Carbomer its signature thickening and suspending performance without the need for heat.
Our Carbomer meets USP 98% assay requirements, with a narrow particle size distribution that disperses readily in water. It is supplied as a white, fluffy powder and is compatible with a wide range of actives, including electrolytes and mild preservatives, making it a practical choice for both lab-scale development and commercial production.
Carbomer is a homopolymer of acrylic acid cross-linked with allyl sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol. The cross-linking density controls the viscosity and yield value of the final gel. The polymer is essentially inert and does not react with most active ingredients, which helps maintain formulation stability over time.
The USP grade contains no residual solvents above pharmacopeial limits and is tested for clarity and gel strength. It is available in several viscosity grades, but all share the same fundamental chemistry: a high molecular weight network that swells in water upon neutralization.
Formulators use Carbomer to build clear gels, creams, and lotions for skin care, wound care, and topical drug delivery. In oral solid dosage, it acts as a binder and controlled-release matrix former in tablets and capsules. It also appears in ophthalmic gels, nasal sprays, and medical lubricants where a stable, non-greasy texture is required.
Beyond pharmaceuticals, Carbomer is a common thickener in hand sanitizers, sunscreens, and cosmetic serums. Its ability to suspend insoluble actives makes it useful in anti-dandruff shampoos and toothpaste, where uniform distribution of particles is critical.
