Chemically, avobenzone is a dibenzoylmethane derivative—specifically 1-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propane-1,3-dione. The molecule exists predominantly in its enol form, a configuration that absorbs strongly in the UVA region (320–400 nm). It is a synthetic compound produced through a multi-step organic synthesis, not a botanical extract, and is supplied as a high-purity crystalline solid.

The enol tautomer is the active UV-absorbing species; keto-enol equilibrium shifts with solvent polarity and pH.
Because avobenzone is oil-soluble and essentially water-insoluble, it is typically incorporated into the oil phase during emulsification. Heating above 80°C should be avoided to prevent degradation, and chelating agents are often added to protect against metal-ion-induced color changes.
