Nannochloropsis is a genus of unicellular marine microalgae belonging to the class Eustigmatophyceae. It is widely cultivated for its rich content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) , and valuable pigments such as astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, and β-carotene. Nannochloropsis has emerged as one of the most promising sources of sustainable, plant‑based omega‑3 fatty acids and natural pigments.
Nannochloropsis contains a complex matrix of bioactive compounds, including EPA‑rich polar lipids (phospholipids and glycolipids), which offer superior bioavailability compared to triglyceride‑form EPA. Its unique lipid profile and high protein content make it a valuable ingredient in dietary supplements, functional foods, aquaculture, and cosmetic formulations.
The microalgae can be supplied as whole dried biomass, defatted powder, or extracted oil, depending on the target application. It is increasingly used as a sustainable alternative to fish oil for omega‑3 supplementation and as a natural colorant and nutrient source.

Omega‑3 source: Rich in EPA, supports cardiovascular, brain, and joint health.
Antioxidant activity: Astaxanthin and other xanthophylls scavenge free radicals.
Anti‑inflammatory support: EPA modulates inflammatory pathways.
Cardiovascular health: Supports healthy lipid profiles and blood pressure.
Skin health: Promotes hydration, elasticity, and photoprotection.
Aquaculture nutrition: Essential fatty acids for fish and shellfish.
Source: Cultivated marine microalgae (Nannochloropsis spp.)
Cultivation: Phototrophic or heterotrophic fermentation
Processing: Harvesting → Washing → Drying (spray‑dried or freeze‑dried) → Grinding → Powdering / Extraction
