L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium (L-5-MTHF Calcium) is the naturally occurring, biologically active form of folate. It is the primary circulating form of folate in the human body and serves as the direct methyl donor for the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine, a critical step in the regulation of homocysteine levels and the synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a universal methyl donor involved in numerous biological processes.

Unlike synthetic folic acid, which requires hepatic conversion via dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) to become biologically active, L-5-MTHF is immediately bioavailable and does not require enzymatic reduction. This is particularly significant for individuals with genetic polymorphisms in the MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) enzyme, who may have reduced capacity to convert folic acid to its active form.
