Citral Structure

Synonyms: 3,7-Dimethyl-2,6-octadienal, Geranial, Neral, Lemongrass aldehyde, Citral A, Citral B

Citral is a naturally occurring acyclic monoterpene aldehyde with the molecular formula C10H16O. It is the principal constituent of lemongrass oil and Litsea cubeba oil, and is also found in the essential oils of lemon, orange, and other citrus fruits. Commercially, it is produced either by fractional distillation of natural essential oils or by synthetic routes, and is supplied as a high-purity liquid with a characteristic fresh lemon aroma.

As a versatile intermediate, Citral is widely used in the flavor and fragrance industry to impart citrus notes to beverages, confectionery, and perfumes. In pharmaceutical and agrochemical manufacturing, it serves as a key building block for the synthesis of vitamin A, ionones, and other terpenoid compounds. Its reactivity and biological activity also make it valuable in antimicrobial and insect repellent formulations.

Product Highlights

  • High purity: ≥98% assay (sum of geranial and neral) ensures consistent performance in sensitive applications.
  • Dual sourcing: Available from natural lemongrass oil or synthetic production, offering supply flexibility.
  • Regulatory support: Compliant with FCC, USP, and EP standards for food and pharmaceutical use.
  • Reliable supply: Bulk quantities in stock, with a stable production capacity to meet large-scale demands.
  • Quality assurance: Each batch is tested for identity, purity, and residual solvents, with COA and MSDS provided.

Applications & Formulation Use

  • Flavor and fragrance: Used as a top note in citrus flavors and perfumes, and as a precursor to ionones for violet-like scents.
  • Pharmaceutical intermediates: Key starting material for vitamin A synthesis and other terpenoid drugs.
  • Antimicrobial agents: Incorporated into preservatives and disinfectants for its broad-spectrum activity.
  • Agrochemicals: Employed in insect repellents and pheromone synthesis.
  • Food and beverage: Adds lemon flavor to soft drinks, candies, and baked goods.
