Chemical Structure & Properties

The primary bioactive lignans in burdock root, arctigenin and its glycoside arctiin, are phenylpropanoid dimers with a dibenzylbutyrolactone skeleton. Arctigenin has a molecular formula of C21H24O6 and a molecular weight of 372.41 g/mol, while arctiin is the 4-O-glucoside of arctigenin. These compounds are sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents; however, our standardized extract is formulated to be water-dispersible for ease of incorporation into various product matrices.
