This simple structure—often written as (CH3)2SO2—underpins its distinctive properties: thermal stability, high water solubility, and the ability to participate in hydrogen bonding without acting as a strong acid or base. Unlike its reduced analog dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl sulfone is fully oxidized and chemically inert under normal conditions, which makes it an attractive building block for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

While the compound occurs naturally in trace amounts in certain plants, algae, and mammalian fluids, commercial supply relies on synthetic routes. Oxidation of dimethyl sulfide or DMSO yields high-purity dimethyl sulfone, which is then purified through crystallization to meet pharmacopeial standards. The resulting white crystalline solid is available in several grades, from technical to USP/EP, with assay values typically exceeding 99%.

In the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement sectors, dimethyl sulfone is best known as MSM. Dimethyl sulfone crystallizes in a monoclinic system, forming colorless, odorless crystals that are stable at room temperature. The molecule is tetrahedral around the sulfur atom, with two methyl groups and two oxygen atoms arranged in a near-symmetric fashion. This geometry results in a significant dipole moment (≈4.4 D), which explains its high solubility in polar solvents like water (up to 150 g/L at 20 °C) and its low solubility in nonpolar media. The sulfonyl group is resistant to oxidation and reduction under mild conditions, contributing to the compound’s long shelf life. It has a melting point of 107–109 °C and boils at 238 °C, allowing for distillation if needed. The material is non-flammable and has a very low vapor pressure at ambient temperatures.
