Curcumin is the principal bioactive polyphenol found in turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), the rhizome of a plant native to Southeast Asia. It is responsible for turmeric’s characteristic yellow color and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, culinary applications, and as a natural dye. It is a member of the curcuminoid family, along with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.
