Clove oil is a complex mixture; besides eugenol, it contains eugenyl acetate (up to 15%), β-caryophyllene (5–12%), and trace amounts of other sesquiterpenes. The oil is lipophilic, with a density of about 1.04 g/mL, and is sensitive to light and oxygen, which can cause discoloration and loss of potency. Proper storage under nitrogen, in airtight containers away from light, helps maintain its quality.
