It is a synthetic compound produced through a multi-step organic synthesis, not a botanical extract, and is supplied as a high-purity crystalline solid.

Its photostability can be enhanced by pairing with triplet-state quenchers such as octocrylene or with film-formers that reduce its mobility in the formula. The enol tautomer is the active UV-absorbing species; keto-enol equilibrium shifts with solvent polarity and pH.

Because avobenzone is oil-soluble and essentially water-insoluble, it is typically incorporated into the oil phase during emulsification. Heating above 80°C should be avoided to prevent degradation, and chelating agents are often added to protect against metal-ion-induced color changes.
