Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a naturally occurring β-amino acid found in high concentrations in mammalian tissues, particularly in the brain, retina, heart, and skeletal muscle.
Unlike most amino acids, taurine does not participate in protein synthesis but exists in its free form or as part of simple derivatives.
It plays multiple physiological roles, including osmoregulation, bile acid conjugation, calcium homeostasis, membrane stabilization, and modulation of neurotransmission.
Taurine is conditionally essential in humans, with endogenous synthesis often insufficient to meet metabolic demands, particularly during stress or developmental stages.

Osmoregulator: Maintains cellular volume and electrolyte balance.
Cardioprotective: Supports myocardial contractility and endothelial function.
Bile acid conjugation: Essential for lipid digestion and absorption.
Neuromodulator: Regulates GABAergic and glycinergic signaling.
Antioxidant support: Indirectly reduces oxidative stress via mitochondrial stabilization.
