It is classified as an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics, and is freely soluble in ethanol, methanol, and chloroform but only sparingly soluble in water.

The compound is synthesized from erythromycin A, a natural fermentation product, through a multi-step chemical process that introduces a nitrogen atom into the macrolide ring.
