Lemongrass Oil is a volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the fresh or dried leaves of Cymbopogon species, mainly Cymbopogon citratus and Cymbopogon flexuosus. Native to tropical Asia, the plant has a long history in traditional medicine and culinary practice, valued for its fresh citrus aroma and preservative properties.

Its chemical profile is dominated by citral, a mixture of the geometric isomers geranial (citral A) and neral (citral B), typically accounting for 70–85% of the oil. Other constituents include myrcene, geraniol, limonene, and citronellal. This composition gives lemongrass oil its characteristic lemon-like scent and broad antimicrobial activity.

Commercial lemongrass oil is standardized to a minimum citral content, usually 75% by GC, and is supplied as a pale yellow to amber liquid. It is widely used in flavor and fragrance formulations, pharmaceutical preparations, personal care products, and as a natural source of citral for further isolation.

Function & Mechanism

  • Antimicrobial activity: Citral disrupts microbial cell membranes, showing efficacy against bacteria and fungi.

  • Flavor and fragrance: Provides a fresh, citrus-like note in food and cosmetic applications.
  • Anti-inflammatory activity: Modulates inflammatory pathways, supporting traditional use for minor pain.
  • Insect repellent: Volatile compounds deter insects, used in natural repellent formulations.
