Dapoxetine HCl is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) developed specifically for the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). Unlike conventional SSRIs, dapoxetine has a rapid onset and short half-life, making it suitable for on-demand dosing. It was first synthesized by Eli Lilly and later licensed to Johnson & Johnson, receiving approval in Europe in 2009 under the brand name Priligy.

Chemically, dapoxetine is a naphthalenyloxy derivative of phenylpropylamine. The hydrochloride salt form is used in oral tablets, offering good stability and solubility. As a potent SSRI, it works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, thereby delaying ejaculation. Its selectivity for the serotonin transporter over other monoamine transporters reduces side effects compared to older antidepressants.
