Synonyms: Curcumin, Diferuloylmethane, (1E,6E)-1,7-bis(4-Hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione, Turmeric Yellow, Natural Yellow 3, C.I. 75300
Curcumin is the principal bioactive polyphenol found in turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), the rhizome of a plant native to Southeast Asia. It is responsible for turmeric’s characteristic yellow color and has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, culinary applications, and as a natural dye. It is a member of the curcuminoid family, along with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.

Curcumin, CAS 458-37-7
Curcumin has been extensively studied for its wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of multiple molecular targets, including NF-κB, COX-2, TNF-α, and various kinases. Curcumin is one of the most thoroughly investigated natural compounds, with thousands of scientific publications supporting its health benefits.
Curcumin is available in both natural (extracted from turmeric) and synthetic forms. Natural curcumin is a mixture of curcuminoids (typically containing 95% total curcuminoids). Synthetic curcumin is chemically identical to natural curcumin but offers higher purity (≥98%) and is free from the variability of botanical sources, making it suitable for research and pharmaceutical applications where consistent composition is critical.

Antioxidant activity: Scavenges free radicals, upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx).
Anti-inflammatory activity: Inhibits COX-2, LOX, and suppresses NF-κB pathway.
Antimicrobial activity: Broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
Neuroprotective effects: Supports cognitive function and neuronal health.
Cardiovascular support: Modulates lipid metabolism and endothelial function.
Joint health: Supports joint comfort and mobility.
