L-Leucine Structure

Synonyms: L-Leucine, (S)-2-Amino-4-methylpentanoic acid, L-2-Amino-4-methylpentanoic acid, (S)-Leucine, 2-Amino-4-methylpentanoic acid, L-α-Aminoisocaproic acid

L-Leucine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and is widely used in pharmaceutical formulations, clinical nutrition, and sports supplements. Its role in muscle protein synthesis and metabolic regulation has made it a key ingredient in parenteral nutrition solutions and performance products.

As an essential amino acid, L-Leucine cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from dietary sources. It is commercially produced through microbial fermentation or enzymatic resolution, yielding high-purity material suitable for injectable and oral applications.

Our L-Leucine is available in USP, EP, and AJI grades, with strict control over optical purity and endotoxin levels. It is supplied as a white crystalline powder, free from animal-derived components and suitable for vegetarian and halal formulations.

Product Overview & Composition

L-Leucine is a non-polar, aliphatic amino acid that plays a critical role in protein synthesis and energy metabolism. It is the most potent of the BCAAs in stimulating muscle protein synthesis, primarily through activation of the mTOR signaling pathway.

In pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, L-Leucine is often combined with isoleucine and valine in a 2:1:1 ratio, or used alone in specialized formulas targeting muscle wasting, hepatic encephalopathy, and metabolic support.

Key Applications

  • Pharmaceutical formulations: used in parenteral and enteral nutrition, as well as in oral supplements for muscle wasting and metabolic disorders.
  • Sports nutrition: included in BCAA and pre-workout products to support muscle recovery and endurance.
  • Clinical nutrition: added to amino acid solutions for patients with hepatic impairment or trauma.
  • Food and beverage: used as a flavor enhancer and nutritional fortifier in functional foods.
  • Cell culture media: essential component in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research.
