Canagliflozin is an orally active sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It was the first SGLT2 inhibitor approved in the United States and has since become a standard therapy for improving glycemic control in adults. The compound is a C-aryl glucoside derivative, structurally distinct from older antidiabetic classes.

As a highly selective SGLT2 inhibitor, canagliflozin works by blocking glucose reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and reduced plasma glucose levels.
