Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid found naturally in plants, animals, and humans. It is structurally related to the essential amino acid tryptophan and serves as the core molecular scaffold for several important neurotransmitters and bioactive compounds.
Natural occurrence: Tryptamine is found in trace amounts in the mammalian brain, where it functions as a neuromodulator. It is also present in certain plants (e.g., Acacia, Mimosa, Psychotria species) as a natural constituent.
White needle shaped crystals with a melting point of 118 ℃ (decomposition at 145-146 ℃). Soluble in ethanol and acetone, almost insoluble in ether, benzene, chloroform, and water. Serotonin is a biogenic imine derived from the decarboxylation of tryptophan. It stimulates smooth muscle contraction. Exists in animals and plants. Formed by oxidation by amine oxidase. The precursor formed for Harman (→ Harman alkaloids). 5-hydroxy derivatives (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) are present in the plasma of mammals and the skin of amphibians, and have vasoconstrictive effects.![]()
